Consider the Investment of a Blog

When building a website, adding a blog is the simplest, most inexpensive element to add. The true investment is not the expense of adding a blog feature to your menu bar, it is the pledge or commitment to write something to post to that blog on a regular basis.

The frequency can be once a day, once a week or once a month. You need to come up with the frequency that works for you. Some people find writing easy and can create 5 posts in minutes. I am not one of those people, it takes time for me to decide on the topics, then create the content. But I must confess it has gotten easier over the years.

My goal is to post to my blog once a month. And if I’m lucky that becomes twice a month. Sometimes I’ll do a few at a time and then stagger the delivery of them. I also keep a spreadsheet with possible topics that present themselves as I help my clients.

When the search engines index your website, they record the number of pages on your website. Frequently small business websites will have 1 to 10 pages, which is a low number by website averages.

When I built my current website, I added a blog. The simple addition of a blog has slowly increased the size of my website. Instead of having a website with 5 pages, I now have one with over 70 pages. Now when my website is indexed it looks much more substantial than a simple 5 page website.

I would also like to suggest, review your content and eliminate the older, outdated articles. As your business improves or services change, and your skills also improve. If I left every article that I’ve posted on the website, it probably would be over 100 pages. So it is important to periodically review your posts and weed out the inferior ones.

Search engines judge the value of your website by the quality and quantity of information available on it. So having a website with 5 pages is ok, but if you are blogging regularly you can grow your website by 50 pages a year or two. This will give your website a huge boost in the number of pages and make your business look more substantial.

The search engines notice the dates of your posts, when they see a pattern, they will revisit your website to check for new content. On the opposite end of the spectrum, when nothing new is posted to your website for years, it will discourage the search engines from visiting.

My advice to you is consider the investment of blogging and grow your website presence and prestige.
